Around the world, fabric waste has been a growing problem, with 1. 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is produced every year with limited sustainable options for repurposing fabric scraps. Scrappys is a company that provides a creative solution by allowing individuals to sell or donate their fabric and clothing scraps. These scraps are collected, sorted, and repurposed into materials that can be used to create stuffed animals or other DIY projects. The scraps are bundled up and sent to crafters who receive patterns to make stuffed bears. These bears can either be kept by the crafters or returned to the company, where the bears will be donated to children at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
In addition to donating, you can by your scraps to from Scappys’ website. We take the scraps and sort them into "lots" that others can purchase for their own projects. This creates a sustainable cycle of recycling, offering crafters a convenient way to acquire materials while helping to reduce fabric waste.
The primary audience for this project includes crafters, quilters, sewists, and DIY enthusiasts of all ages who want to reduce the amount of fabric that ends up in landfills each year. Quilters often accumulate large amounts of leftover fabric after completing a project and may not know how to responsibly dispose of it. Scrappys offers an easy, eco-friendly solution to recycle these scraps into something useful and meaningful. By donating, crafters help reduce waste and contribute to a cause that brings joy to children in need. It’s a sustainable solution that gives fabric a second life, all while supporting a good cause.

Scrappys is a mission-driven company addressing the growing issue of textile waste, which amounts to 1.92 million tonnes annually. The company offers a sustainable solution by allowing individuals to sell or donate fabric and clothing scraps, which are then repurposed into materials for DIY projects and handmade stuffed animals. These fabric scraps are sent to crafters who use provided patterns to create stuffed bears, which are donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital—blending environmental responsibility with charitable giving.
In addition to supporting donations, Scrappys also sells fabric scrap "lots" to quilters, sewists, and DIY enthusiasts, promoting creative reuse and reducing landfill waste. By turning discarded fabric into valuable resources, Scrappys encourages sustainability within the crafting community and offers an eco-friendly way for individuals to support both the planet and a meaningful cause.
objectives
To independently research, design, and produce a logo, a donation box, a subscription box, a website, a poster ad, and sewing patterns and instructions.
To thoroughly research subscription box trends and how to incorporate them into the design.
To apply previous knowledge of package design and branding, and photography into the components of the project
To actively self-critique designs throughout the entire process to improve the quality of work
To comprehend and apply critique from peers and instructors whenever necessary
To produce a cohesive, successful design across all deliverables with great attention to detail
To present a form a brand with the company and keep it consistent throughout the project
Target Audience
The target audience for the Scrappys project primarily includes crafters, quilters, sewists, and DIY enthusiasts of all ages who are passionate about sustainability and creative reuse. These individuals often accumulate fabric scraps from their projects and may struggle to find environmentally responsible ways to dispose of them. Scrappys offers an appealing solution by transforming leftover textiles into meaningful items like stuffed animals, which can either be kept by the crafter or donated to children at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. This audience values not only the opportunity to create something by hand but also the chance to contribute to a greater cause. Many are eco-conscious and motivated to reduce the environmental impact of textile waste, while others may be drawn to the sense of community and purpose that comes from giving back. This spirit of generosity aligns with a broader national trend: according to the Philanthropy Roundtable, Americans gave nearly $500 billion to charity in 2022, with individuals contributing 64% of that amount, far more than foundations or corporations. This demonstrates the strong culture of individual giving in the U.S., and Scrappys taps into this ethos by providing an accessible, feel-good option for repurposing scraps. It appeals to a creative, compassionate, and sustainability-minded demographic that finds joy in both crafting and caring.

RESEARCH SYPNOSIS
When I began developing this project, I focused on the growing popularity of subscription boxes, especially in the crafting and DIY space. These boxes offer convenience, creativity, and a sense of community—values that strongly appeal to hobbyists of all ages. I found that many people are drawn to curated experiences that deliver everything they need for a hands-on project, which inspired the concept behind Scrappys: a subscription box that provides repurposed fabric scraps and materials to make stuffed animals, with the added option of donating them to children at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
In addition to studying subscription trends, I researched the environmental impact of textile waste. I was shocked to learn that over 1.92 million tonnes of fabric waste are generated each year (Gini, 2023), much of which ends up in landfills. This reinforced my desire to create a solution that helps reduce waste in a fun and meaningful way. By repurposing leftover fabric into creative DIY kits, Scrappys aims to give materials a second life while making sustainability more accessible to everyday crafters.
I also explored the habits and needs of my target audience—crafters, quilters, sewists, and DIY enthusiasts. Many of them end up with unused fabric and are unsure how to dispose of it responsibly. Through this research, I realized that Scrappys could serve as both a sustainable resource and a way for people to connect with a larger purpose. Combining eco-friendly values with creativity and charitable giving, Scrappys is designed to resonate with people who care about making a difference through their craft.
PROCESS NARRATIVE
For this project, I knew I needed to create seven key components. My goal was to design a cohesive system centered around a bear sewing pattern. The components included the sewing pattern with instructions, a subscription box for scrap fabric with a smaller box inside for sewing supplies, a donation box for fabric scraps to be placed in craft stores like Joann Fabrics, a promotional poster, and a website. The website would serve as a hub for finding donation locations, ordering the subscription box, and purchasing scrap fabric lots.
When designing the subscription box, I chose a shape similar to a shoebox so it could be reused to send back completed bears. Inside, I later added a smaller container to hold essential supplies like ribbon, thread, needles, and buttons. I made sure the main box was large enough to include the fabric scraps and the sewing pattern, ensuring everything needed to complete the bear was neatly organized in one place.
The donation box went through several design changes during development. Initially, it was much too large, so I resized it to be more practical for in-store placement. Based on critique and feedback, I eventually added a display backboard to the back of the box. This helped make it more eye-catching and inviting to potential donors when placed in high-traffic craft store areas.
Logo PROCESS Work
When designing the logo, I wanted it to feel fun, approachable, and full of personality, while still reflecting the scrappy, handmade nature of the brand. I chose warm colors to create a welcoming and friendly vibe, which helps convey the positive and creative spirit behind Scrappys. To enhance the playful, patchwork feel, I used mismatched letters in varying colors, along with subtle stitch lines on each letter to highlight the sewing and DIY aspect of the company. The result is a logo that captures both the charm of crafting and the heart of sustainability.
